Debut The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Biggoron is a recurring character within The Legend of Zelda. He is typically depicted as being, as his name suggests, the largest of Gorons and with a size comparable to a mountain, as well as being a master blacksmith.

Background[edit]

N64 Games[edit]

He first appears in Ocarina of Time, where he is a smithy living near Death Mountain Crater. He is the most talented blacksmith in the game and will reforge the Broken Goron's Sword into Biggoron's Sword for Link at the end of the game's trading sidequest. However, first Link must help him with his irritated eyes, by filling his prescription with King Zora and bringing him the eyedrop before they go bad. The sword would then be repaired within several days. He would also be seen dancing at the ending celebration at Lon Lon Ranch, although due to his size only his lower body can be seen. In this game, he has the speech pattern of slurring his r's and s's.

In Majora's Mask, the Terminan counterpart of Biggoron is an invisible Goron found blocking the entrance to the Snowhead Temple and blowing gusts of wind which prevent anyone from passing through. However, playing the Goron's Lullaby will lull him to sleep and cause him to tumble down the chasm.

Handheld Games[edit]

Biggoron also appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, where he is found at the peak of Holodrum's Goron Mountain. It is explained that he lives outside due to being too big to fit in any caves, although this also leads him to develop colds. During the game's trading sequence, Link can give him Lava Soup which helps Biggoron to recover, and in return he gives Link a Goron Vase. In a linked game, he is shown to yearn to make great swords like those that the Gorons of old are known for, but he does not know "Biggoron's Secret" (implying that he is not the original Biggoron). After being given the secret by Link, he will reforge the Great Goron's Sword into a Biggoron's Sword, which he gives to Link out of gratitude.

He also appears in The Minish Cap, where he is found by the peak of Veil Falls. His figurine description specifies that he is larger than a mountain and claims no one has seen all of his body at once. In this game, he thinks Link is a small Goron and after the game is completed he asks Link if he can chew on his shield, due to steel being a Goron delicacy. After nibbling on it for a while, he will spit the shield out in a refined form, making it into a Mirror Shield.

Phantom Hourglass Version[edit]

Biggoron is the elder of Goron Island in Phantom Hourglass. This incarnation shares little with the previous versions of Biggoron save for his name, as he is the size of a normal Goron. Link comes to him looking for the Gorons' pure metal, but first Biggoron subjects him to a Goron initiation quiz. Afterwards, he sends his son Gongoron to guide Link through the Goron Temple. Biggoron is also a bit more attached to money, charging Link to take the initiation test and then asking for dues of 146 Rupees afterwards. However, he returns the fee to Link when he leaves the island.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Ocarina of Time, Biggoron is mentioned as being a childhood friend of King Zora.
