Barboach is a slimy loach-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. Its evolved form is Whiscash.

Information[edit]

Barboach has sensitive whiskers that it uses to taste things in a manner akin to a human's taste, and the whiskers act as an efficient radar system. They can locate prey in even the murkiest of water with the use of its whiskers. Its body is perfect for surviving in muddy and murky environments, as Barboach's body is also surrounded by a slimy film that acts like a barrier which protects its body from the germs in muddy water. Barboach's slimy body also makes it nearly impossible to grasp, as it can easily slip away when grabbed. It is said in one region that Barboach were actually born from hardened mud.

It can evolve into Whiscash at Level 30.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, Barboach could be fished somewhat commonly with the Good Rod or very commonly with the Super Rod at Routes 111, 114 and 120, Meteor Falls and Victory Road. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, it could be fished with the Good Rod at Routes 205, 208 (Diamond/Pearl only), 210, 212 (Diamond/Pearl only), 225 (Platinum only), 227 and 228, Oreburgh Gate, Ravaged Path, Mt. Coronet, the Great Marsh, Eterna City and Celestic Town (Diamond/Pearl only).

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it could be fished with the Super Rod at the Safari Zone's Marshland area, appearing only if enough Water objects were present. In Black and White, it was commonly fished at Route 8, Icirrus Town and the Moor of Icirrus.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it was found at the Lake on the Sapphire Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 10, Endless Level 14, Forever Level 9 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the first five floors of Waterfall Cave, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at Waterfall Cave and Serenity River.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the anime, Barboach was set to appear in a series of the Hoenn series featuring its evolved form Whiscash, but the episode was withheld from airing after earthquakes in Japan. Barboach's only actual appearances have been primarily minor ones,
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Barboach were used by members of Team Aqua during the Ruby/Sapphire arc, and one was shown belonging to Briney. Diamond also attempted to catch one at the Great Marsh and failed miserably during the Diamond/Pearl arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a combination of "barb" (possibly due to its whiskers resembling barbs) with "loach" (which of course is the fish it resembles)
