Astrid is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and she is the only playable Bow Knight in the game. She is also playable in Radiant Dawn.
Background[edit]
Astrid was born into House Damiell, a prominent house of nobles in Begnion. Her family was very strict and controlling. Many of her brothers and sisters were married off by her parents to people they did not love nor grow to love, and Astrid could tell their sorrow from their letters. Astrid herself was later arranged to marry Vice Minister Lekain, who was thirty years older than her. She decided to rebel against her family afterwards, and she did so by enlisting with the Begnion knights so she could make her own path through life. However, she was also somewhat timid and hestitated while wielding her bow in battle, even after her training. At the same time she endeavored to overcome this weakness, and she was also assigned Gatrie as a bodyguard.
In Path of Radiance, Astrid was one of the knights who defended the Apostle Sanaki's ship from Daein soldiers disguised as pirates in "Chapter 13: A Guiding Wind", alongside Gatrie. The others did not think she should not risk her life in battle due to her noble status, but Astrid convinced them that they needed all the help they could get. During the battle, Astrid met with Ike and teamed up with his group to defeat the enemy, and she was also able to convince Gatrie to join Ike's side with her. Astrid traveled with Ike's group for the rest of the war. She received new confidence from fighting in the war and applied her new confidence towards serving the knights of Begnion.
However, Astrid instead joined with the Crimean Royal Knights to look after Makalov, whom she had met during the Mad King's War and grown to admire. She constantly asserted her irrational admiration of Makalov and defended him whenever Marcia criticized his bad habits. Three years later, Astrid was first playable when called into action in "Chapter 3: Geoffrey's Charge" of "Part 2: Of Countries and Kings". She fought under [[Geoffrey's command in "Engdame: Elincia's Gambit" as well as several chapters of "Part 3: Interesecting Vows". They were then sent to Ike's command for "Endgame: From Pain, Awakening" at which point she could be sent to any of the three armies for "Part 4: Of Gods and Men".
In the following years, Astrid became renowned throughout Crimea as a Royal Knight, her beauty and prowess becoming known to allies and enemies alike. If she had an A Support with Makalov, the two married, but it was said that she never tamed him.
Support Conversation Summaries[edit]
Astrid is capable of having Support conversations with three other characters.
- Gatrie- Astrid had heard that Gatrie had worked among the Greil Mercenaries before, so she asks Gatrie to teach her how to fight like a mercenary. Gatrie stalls her because he has no idea how to train people, but he decides to go through with it because he thinks it is a sign she is interested in him. In the second conversation, Gatrie begins his first lesson until he cannot remember what to say next and tells her he'll continue next time. Gatrie once again is left thinking that Astrid is taken with him. In the final conversation, Gatrie quizzes Astrid and asks her is she has a boyfriend, at which point she says she is engaged. Gatrie begins to sniff and walks away from her. However, he then leads himself to believe that Astrid told him that only because she wanted him to swoon her off her feet and steal her away, so he rushes back to talk to her.
- Makalov- In the first conversation, Astrid introduces herself to Makalov formally, leading him to say he's not actually a knight, and she gives him some wildflowers that he dropped. Makalov says he picked them to butter up his sister Marcia (if Marcia is dead at that point in the story, he picks the flowers to place by her grave). Astrid considered him thoughtful, and he let her keep several of the flowers as thanks. In the next conversation, Makalov suggested that they were linked by fate but only because he wanted to borrow money from her. He found she had given all her money to a poor family she met, which caused Makalov to criticize her move. However, Astrid then gave Makalov an expensive pendant of hers. In the third conversation, Makalov returns the medallion to Astrid because his sister caught him trying to pawn it off and got angry at him (if Marcia had died, Ike instead got angry at Makalov and said he was insulting his sister's memory). Makalov then became shocked to learn that the pendent was a memento of Astrid's grandmother, and she said she had given it so freely to Makalov because her grandmother's memory would always be in her heart and so she felt less bad about giving the pendant to someone in need. Makalov expresses his humility and admits he was going to use the money for gambling, but Astrid instantly forgives him and calls him a fine gentlemen before she becomes embarrassed and leaves.
- Sothe- Astrid asks Sothe about how the weapons triangle works, but he scoffs at her for being ignorant of such common mercenary knowledge, and he guesses that she once was a noble. He wonders why someone like her is in the war but deduces that she's alright as long as she takes down Daein soldiers. In the next conversation, Sothe helps Astrid after she passes out from over-exerting herself and has trouble with the realities of war. He tells her the battlefield is not a place for nobles when they have lavish and free lives back home. But Astrid says she joined the Begnion military because she was not free at her home and tells him about her arranged marriage. Sothe assures her he wasn't trying to pry, but Astrid thanks him. In the final conversation, Sothe realizes that the nobles must be different then he realized and apologizes for thinking of her as just a pampered noble. He then tells her to keep up the good work because she's earned her freedom and should never let her parents take that away.
