Based on calculations by the ancient Unix calender, leading morons have concluded that the date the world will definitely end for real this time is the 18th of May, 2033 at 0333 GMT

While scientists and historians and people who know what the hell they're talking about say that at that time the Unix Calender will simply roll over to 2,000,000,000, and that literally nothing will change because all computers currently on the market are able to handle this and that there is no reason that quote, "the sky will rain down on the world, ushering in an era of destruction the likes of which the world has never seen."

All the same, we can expect two decades of movies about the date, and at least fifteen hundred specials about it on the increasingly poorly named History Channel.

All they ever cover is World War II anymore. Not that I have a big problem with that, but they should just call it the Hitlery Channel.

The way I see it, there's a 50/50 chance the world will end on that day. That is, "Either it will, or it won't." So: 50/50 chance.

Kudos to anyone who knows where I just got that from :D

But the odds are a LOT lower. For the world to end, either the very nature of the universe would have to be completely wrong or at least our understanding of stellar evolution.

Or there's a meteorite we didn't see coming. Or Ahmedinedjad and Kim Jung Il are up to something. Or some scientific phenomena we don't know about.

Pfft. Science. What has science ever successfully predicted

I'll put my faith in the random guesses of historical schizophrenics. They have a much more impressive track record, you have to admit.

No, none of those would destroy the world. WE might not be here, but the WORLD sure would be.

The world is whatever the aggregate of humans believe it to be. Truth is subjective. Thus, without mankind, the Earth doesn't exist.

This is the fundamental principle of politics. It's also why so much of life doesn't make any damn sense at all.

Would you say the same thing about Venus? It might not be called Venus without people, but it would most certainly exist, and indeed did exist, without people.

Venus is a planet. Earth is a world. That's all you really need to know.

I think Dr. Wordsmyth called. Something about synonyms? Anyone know what he's talking about?
