"Ebony" and "Ivory" sound a HELL of a lot better than "Black" and "White".

I think I actually agree. Generation 1 and 2 were colors, Generation 3 and 4 were gems... well, platinum's more a mineral. Are pearls considered gems? >.> Colors are simpler, maybe that's why they went with it.

Generation 3 also had FireRed and LeafGreen. Not necessarily gemstones... technically. Also Platinum's more a metal, yes. Pearl had better be a gemstone, haha.
