Even the Masterpieces have elements that you can unlock. The types and ways to unlock them are listed below.

Image

Donkey Kong (1986, NES)

HOW TO UNLOCK

It starts from stage 2. Try comparing it to the Smash Bros. stage 75m.

Image

Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988, NES)

HOW TO UNLOCK

Peach’s levitation and vegetable-pulling abilities come from this game. Therefore, it starts with Peach.

Image

Super Mario World (1991, Super NES)

HOW TO UNLOCK

This is the source of the Melee stage Yoshi’s Island. This game was bundled with the Super NES outside of Japan, and is quite a well-known title.

Image

F-Zero (1991, Super NES)

HOW TO UNLOCK

F-Zero, the first of the series, so to speak. The Falcon Flyer only appeared in the comics in the instruction manual, though.

Image

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo 64)

HOW TO UNLOCK

If you’re using the included save data, you’ll suddenly be able to play with the adult Link. When outside, you can call Link’s trusty steed Epona by drawing the ocarina and performing the following pattern: ↑←→↑←→

These are all, of course, only trial versions. If you like one of them and feel like you want to play quite a lot, then buying it would probably be the way to go.

For more info., check here.
--------------

I like how Sakurai handled the Ocarina of Time method to unlock.

Are we not supposed to figure out that the 'certain character' he's referring to is the Ice Climbers?

All right, fine, fine, we can all play 'naive' if he wants.

It makes even less sense when you realize its not even on the Japanese VC.

BUT ITS NOT LIKE NOT HAVING A 3 MINUTE DEMO OF A KICKASS VIDEO GAME HINDERS THE FUNITUDE OF THE GAME RIGHT?

Gotta ask yourself... what three minutes of Earthbound best sums up the whole game?

I stand by my statement, as do the low game sales, NOA not bothering to ever port it, and the sequel being too crummy to even translate! What a terrible franchise.

Uh... Earthbound ("Mother") is a popular series in Japan, it WAS translated and ported over here, and it has a cult following. I for one have fond memories of it.

Your honor, he's said so much crap I don't know what to object to! I could present my Attorney's Badge and I'd still be right!

I tried playing Earthbound. I was SO VERY BORED I simply HAD to stop.

Though I'll have to admit that the only RPGs I've liked are the Mario RPGs. Excluding Super Mario RPG.
