OoC: This is a Zelda fanfic which is basically an adaptation of Link's Awakening. Because I feel like it. More serious then my other works.
Prologue: "To Sleep, Perchance to Dream..."
Finally Link was going home. Link thought he could make out the silhouette of Hyrule's mountains over the horizon, and if so, then he'd reach there by the next morning. He allowed a grin to cross his battle-worn Elvish face. After months of travel and extensive training, he'd finally be returning to Hyrule. And Princess Zelda.
No matter how much Link convinced himself that a relationship with Hyrule's princess would only lead to trouble, a part of him still remained unconvinced. It had been since the day Link first laid eyes on Zelda so long ago it felt like a dream. It was the thought of Zelda that urged Link to continue and press on against impossible odds to overthrow the monsterous Ganon. Ganon was an inhuman beast, one that Link was sure he'd never have to worry about falling in love with.
Now Link felt urged to get to Hyrule as soon as possible. What if Ganon was back? What if something even worse had taken his place? That was why Link went on this journey. He wanted to be prepared next time evil stroke and wipe it out swiftly befor eit deteriorates Hyrule's beautiful land.
Link climbed to the deck of his small galleon to make sure everything was working properly. After adjusting to the smiling sunlight and seeing that the ship was riding perfectly over the soothing waves, he took a moment to lay down and stare up at the sky.
He saw a flock of seagulls flying above him in a "V" formation, headed straight in the direction of Hyrule. They seemed to be in an awful rush. Too bad, Link really liked seagulls too.
Seconds later a dark shadow fell over Link. Looking up, Link saw the comforting Sun had been blocked out. Overboard he saw the once calm waves had grown dark and wild beneath the shadows. The ship began bobbing up and down on the wild waves. Rain poured down from the clouds and lashed down on Link's face while lightning clapped around him.
Link stared in horror. A squall had come from nowhere and it meant to wipe him off the map. Link couldn't let it. Not yet. He had to get to Hyrule, he had to see Zelda. But this was no normal monster; Link could not vanquish it with his sword and shield. So Link would have to rely on his own strength, intelligence and most importantly, his courage. No storm stood between Link and his home.
Link started to run across the deck when suddenly the winds came, strong and fast. Unfortunately they were flowing against him. The ship was starting to even go backwards when Link ran to the mast.
Gripping the mast for dear life, he grabbed a rope and yanked it to pull up his sail. At least that would decrease the wind's effects on him.
Now the only problem lied in the lightening and the waves. Link realized that the tall mast he was clinging to made a great lightning rod. Link needed a way to stop it.
Too late.
Link looked up and saw the lightning as it flashed towards his ship. Link felt everything moving in slow motion, and once more his thoughts turned to Zelda. He'd never see her again. He'd never be abe to tell her how he feels. He found himself shouting out her name as the moment stopped and the boat exploded.
With his last thought, Link wished he could see Zelda just one more time. Just one more time. Then everything went black.
