 Let's play?
The forums could use some activity, yeah? I haven't been feeling very literary lately (sorry OG Forum), so I thought maybe we could all gather 'round a let's play. If you have seen me do this thread before, you are wrong. Go away. So, without further ado, I present to you...

:?: What's this all about, then? :?:
As you should all know, Mega Man X takes the iconic Mega Man series and puts a new spin on it--the most prominent additions being the dash maneuver and the armor upgrades.

Don't expect anything too intense out of this LP, just some casual commentary. I'm hoping to get some forum interaction going, and I'm going to disable comments on YouTube so you have to make your snarky comments in this topic rather than on YouTube. I need you guys to vote on what order I fight the Mavericks, and if you could suggest me some gameplay challenges, that would be awesome and make this thread the best ever.

:x I hate let's play videos. :x
I'll be uploading at least two videos for each update--one with audio commentary, one without. Bonus videos probably will only have commentary.

 Why's this thread here?
Any discussion related to Mega Man X, the Mega Man franchise, or even the LP videos themselves is fair game in this topic. If you want to reply and talk about the state of file sizes in 100 years, how good you were at video games as a kid, or robot hologram dads, go right ahead.

But also, I'm hoping for some...

 Audience participation
This is a long section.

I need you guys to vote on the next stage I'm going to play! If you don't care which I do next, just pick something at random. Each time I post a video, I'll post a list of who you can vote for.

I also want to say that if you can come up with any zany challenges, you should post them. Off the top of my head, here are some challenges I can think of: clear a stage without the charge shot, reverse controls (or otherwise change the controls), clear a stage only using a certain weapon, play two stages at once. If you guys want to see me take on any of those challenges, just say the word. However, that's off the top of my head--if you guys can think of anything, name it! I'll see if I can do it, and if I can't, you get to rub my face in it.

I'm also open to anyone doing guest commentary. If you can get Skype running, I can get you in as a guest host. Actually, I'd love to have as many different guest hosts as possible in this LP!

:elzie: Maverick Killing Status :elzie:
Dead Mavericks:
-Sting Chameleon - Stingeleon - Forest Stage
-Armored Armadillo - Armordillo - Mine Stage
-Spark Mandrill - Spandrill - Power Plant Stage
-Boomer Kuwanger - Boomeranger - Tower Stage
-Launch Octopus - Launchopus - Ocean Stage
-Storm Eagle - Steagle - Sky Stage
-Flame Mammoth - Flammoth - Factory Stage
-Chill Penguin - Chillguin - Snow Mountain Stage

Mavericks yet to be killed:
NONE

I hope you guys don't mind a double post--I didn't want all this in the intro post.
Image
That's right, you oughta know it... the first stage is the Highway Stage!

Video 1: Intro - Highway Stage
Commentary - No Commentary

In this video, Golem and Nintenfreak talk about file sizes in 100 years, say hello to Toby, don't know what a Kuwanger is, and totally have not seen this video weeks ago.

You may not realize this, but Mega Man games have cool music. This'll probably be the millionth time you've heard it, but it's a good tune, anyway, so I'm throwing it in here.
Opening Stage (Central Highway)

On the other hand, you may not be familiar with this version. This is from a Japanese rearrangement album, and I think it's pretty rad:
Prologue - Awakening Road ~OPENING: HIGHWAY STAGE~

That's this update! Before I go, I'd like to issue a challenge. Whoever can draw the suavest Vile wins 1,000 Hikermonies! That's right!

I also need you guys to vote on which stage I tackle next. Don't pick Chill Penguin unless you like being boring. Here are your choices:
-Boomer Kuwanger - Boomeranger - Tower Stage
-Spark Mandrill - Spandrill - Power Plant Stage
-Storm Eagle - Steagle - Sky Stage
-Launch Octopus - Launchopus - Ocean Stage
-Chill Penguin - Chillguin - Snow Mountain Stage
-Sting Chameleon - Stingeleon - Forest Stage
-Armored Armadillo - Armordillo - Mine Stage
-Flame Mammoth - Flammoth - Factory Stage

I vote Sting Chameleon, because while I love Golem platonically, it is tough love.

I vote on the following order:

1) Sting Chameleon
2) Boomer Kuwanger
3) Launch Octopus
4) Armored Armadillo
5) Spark Mandrill
6) Chill Penguin
7) Flame Mammoth
8 ) Storm Eagle

Challenge: Never enter another stage to mine for powerups. You can only enter the stages in that order. I'm willing to discuss going back for powerups after you beat all 8.

Sting Chameleon would be no problem. 8)

Also, I intend to skip as many upgrades as I can--thankfully, it's impossible to skip the dash boots and buster upgrade in this one. I'm not sure I can beat the Sigma stages under those conditions, but by golly I'm going to try.

Although, Steve, I did notice you suggest I play Storm Eagle AFTER Flame Mammoth. Kinda weird how the head upgrade is good for only that one specific thing.

I seem to recall the stage that gives you the Wire weapon is the easiest one to start with. Was that Launch Octopus?

Al and Golemio, you two make great colormen. But... is that really Golem playing? Or did you just dig up somebody else's Let's Play video and dub over it? How did you do that, even? You don't live close to each other.

Kuwanger is actually a portmanteu word. It comes from the Japanese word "kuwagatamushi" which means "Stag Beetle."

I don't see why they couldn't just call him "Boomerang Kuwagatamushi." I blame racism.

You totally need to state this fact in your next Let's Play.

Why are comments disabled for your videos?

Or they could have called him Boomer Stag. Just throwing that out there as a possibility.

We did it over Skype, which has VoIP. It's like making phone calls for free.

I downvoted one of his videos on NFA for disabling comments as an affront to my right to free speech. But he does that so we'll talk about it here. You have to get the link from here, anyway.

Nintenfreak has the idea. 8) The point of the thread is to generate discussion about Mega Man X, with the videos providing some focus to the discussion (we'll see how well that works). That point is kind of defeated if some of your comments make it onto YouTube rather than here.

Ditto McCloaker wrote:

Is this a Dive Man joke or a Wire Sponge joke? :?: Anyways, Launch Octopus is quite a hard stage to start on--it turns out he's pretty difficult without the dash.

Anyway, to be perfectly clear, I'm not playing as we talk. The gameplay footage is recorded in advance and the commentary is recorded afterward (in other words, this is postcommentary). This is for two reasons.
1) My live commentary is very terrible. (you can trust me on this)
2) My computer cannot stream video games to save its life. This machine doesn't have a lot of horsepower.

This is buried deep inside the intro post, so it might bear repeating: I'm open to anyone doing guest commentary. If you can get Skype running, I can get you in as a guest host. Actually, I'd love to have as many different guest hosts as possible in this LP.

Also, I will say it's weird that they didn't change Kuwanger to something that makes sense in English.

I guess I'll vote for Flame Mammoth, possibly out of mercy. And I can probably still guest commentate at some point

It's an "Old Man Ditto is so old he can't keep MMX and MMX2 straight" joke. That's right, Wire Sponge is in MMX2 isn't he? But I was right, he's the easiest one to start with.

Which boss is it who's stage is different depending on when you do it? Like, if you go into it after beating another stage, the electricity is out, and there's a crashed ship in the background?

I'd like to see that happen, cuz I never noticed it back in the day...

Thanks, GORE. 8) I'll hold you to that. I guess.

Ohhh, pff. I was somewhat confused since Dive Man himself gives you homing torpedoes, like Launch Octopus, and Dive Man's stage contains a Wire upgrade for Mega Man.

Anyway, in X2, I typically start with Wheel Alligator since his power unlocks so much (including the all-important leg upgrade).

This happens if you defeat Storm Eagle then play Spark Mandrill's stage. Other stage changes of note:
-If you beat Launch Octopus then play Sting Chameleon's stage, it's flooded. (This allows you to get a Heart Tank.)
-If you beat Ice Penguin then play Flame Mammoth's stage, the lava is cooled over. (This allows you to get a Heart Tank, too.)
It's worth noting that they never brought back this mechanic until Mega Man X6, where it's used to somewhat annoying effect.

Double post, what?

Anyway, before we get down to this week's video, I have a
:bowser: Thread Challenge! :bowser:
Instead of letting youse guys vote on who I fight next, I'm going to host a challenge. Whoever wins the challenge gets to choose which stage I do next! Admittedly the last challenge didn't... happen at all, but I think this one should work better.

The challenge: Write the best Mega Man haiku. When you post the haiku, be sure to include which maverick you want to see beaten next.

Anyway, now that that's done, it looks like the maverick that got the most votes for this week was Sting Chameleon!

Video 2: Sting Chameleon - Stingeleon - Forest Stage
Commentary - No Commentary

In this video, Golem and Nintenfreak are a bit jumpy for the first maverick stage, can't get upgrades, and reference R-Space for no good reason.

Awesome Music Corner

Original:
Sting Chameleon Stage (Recon Base Ruins)

Rearrangement:
Welcome To Mechanical Forest ~FOREST STAGE~

Finally, here are your choices for the next stage:
-Boomer Kuwanger - Boomeranger - Tower Stage
-Spark Mandrill - Spandrill - Power Plant Stage
-Storm Eagle - Steagle - Sky Stage
-Launch Octopus - Launchopus - Ocean Stage
-Chill Penguin - Chillguin - Snow Mountain Stage
-Armored Armadillo - Armordillo - Mine Stage
-Flame Mammoth - Flammoth - Factory Stage

It's important to me that it's difficult for you.

I actually managed to beat Wheel Gator first on my first playthrough, and the habit stuck for that very reason. Somehow, I find him easier than Wire Sponge. You just have to love wall jumping.
